Visit Rehoboth Beach, Delaware - Enjoy the Beach!!!!
The earliest inhabitants of the Rehoboth Beach area were Native Americans who traveled to the coast during the summer months to enjoy the cool ocean breezes and the abundance of seafood. Between 1650 and 1675, English and Dutch settlers began establishing roots in the area, which eventually became home to farmers and members of William Penns early legislatures. Later generations of residents also played a role in the American Revolutionary War.
According to the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and Museum, the towns development as a seaside destination began in 1872, when Reverend Robert W. Todd of St. Pauls Methodist Episcopal Church in Wilmington visited a religious camp meeting on the Jersey Shore. Inspired by the experience, he pursued the idea of establishing a similar retreat along the Delaware coast.
In 1873, the Rehoboth Camp Meeting Association was formed after purchasing 414 acres of land from local farmers. The grounds were carefully planned in a fan-shaped design, featuring wide streets, parks, and designated building lots. Much of this original layout remains visible in Rehoboth Beach today.
Although the association discontinued its formal camp meetings by 1881, other religious groups continued using the grounds for services into the late 19th century. In 1891, the Delaware General Assembly incorporated the community as a municipality under the name Henlopen City. Later that same year, the name was changed to Rehoboth Beach, marking an important step in the towns evolution into the beloved coastal destination it is today.
Over the years, Rehoboth Beach grew from a quiet seaside retreat into a popular vacation spot known for its beautiful beaches, lively boardwalk, charming downtown, and welcoming coastal atmosphere. Today, the town blends its historic roots with modern attractions, making it a wonderful place to visit throughout the year.
